Getting out and
making mates

Social connections – whether with friends, family, neighbours, or everyday community members – are vital to our wellbeing.

Strong relationships are linked to better mental and physical health, higher self-esteem, and even longer life. In fact, research shows that meaningful social connections can boost longevity by 50%, while a lack of connection may be more harmful than smoking or obesity.

Yet despite their importance, one in four Australian men report struggling to maintain these connections

Join a men’s circle!

Also sometimes known as a men’s group, men’s circles provide an opportunity for men to discuss the many things that they may find little chance to discuss with their families, work mates or at the pub. A men’s circle aims to create an environment of trust and support in which men can share their stories.

A good place to start is Men’s Table where you can find information on their Entree’s. An ENTREE is an introduction to how a Men’s Table works through open sharing over a relaxed meal. www.themenstable.org

The West Australian Men’s Gathering since 1995 is an annual spring 3 day retreat for all men or masculine identifying people. The Gathering is a space for men to meet, laugh, learn and explore some of the issues affecting our lives. www.mensgatheringwa.org.au

The ManKind Project WA (MKP WA) is a non-profit organisation that offers men powerful trainings, weekly peer-facilitated men’s circles. www.mkpwa.org.au

The Fathering Project – Dads Groups. Dads Group are a meet up amongst fathers and father figures, typically new fathers. These groups provide a space for dads to share experiences, ask questions, connect with other dads and learn from each other in a judgment-free environment. www.thefatheringproject.org/dads
